Horseback Riding at M Diamond Ranch, Sedona, Arizona

Grand Canyon South Rim

One of my favorite morning activities is horseback riding in Sedona.  There are so many trails and so much to see at that wonderful slow pace.

The M Diamond Ranch does it right.  They offer many different options and will come and pick you up from the Inn!  You can choose from a one hour trail ride, a full day ride with a cowboy cookout, or many other ride packages.

The M Diamond Ranch is a real working ranch.  You can learn how they have worked for 100 years to preserve it.  They are committed to wildlife preservation and takes great joy in offering their guests a taste of the traditional Arizona ranch lifestyle.

Sedona Cowboy Cookouts

Combine a horseback ride with a hearty steak dinner or ranch breakfast. Mmmmm good.

The Sedona Cowboy Cookouts combine a one-hour trail ride, a trip on a horse drawn wagon, and a hearty meal cooked outdoors over an open fire just for you. You’ll eat at “The Sedona Lookout” our all-weather cookout site with spectacular 360 degree views of Sedona, the Verde Valley and the Mogollon Rim. You’ll spend about 3 to 4 hours as our guest for either the morning or evening cookout, enjoying delicious food in a casual atmosphere with room for your kids to roam.

The Morning “Ranch Adventure Day”

The morning “Ranch Adventure Day” is particularly well suited for families with children. After your trail ride and wagon ride, ou’ll be treated to a hearty breakfast, followed by roping lessons, a game of horse shoes and special activities with our kid-sized miniature horses, cart rides and pony rides. It’s a fun morning the kids will talk about forever! The menu features Dutch Oven

Sedona Horseback Trail Rides

The M Diamond trail is Sedona horseback riding heaven. Their horseback riding trail climbs a ridge above the ranch providing breathtaking views of Sedona’s Red Rocks, the Mogollon Rim, Verde Valley and the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagstaff. Depending on the season, you might see elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, Gambel quail, javelina, red tail hawks and western bluebirds in the winter. So, bring your camera – the sights are awesome! Trail rides are small, less than 15 people and you will be guided by a friendly, knowledgeable M Diamond Ranch wrangler.

Visit the M Diamond Ranch website for The Wrangler Guide recommendation regarding clothing, rider ages, etc.

Lipan Point Overview

The M-Diamond Ranch is located approximately 6.5 miles southeast of the SR 179/I-17 interchange on Forest Service Road 618. The Forest Service has designated FS Road 618 as Desert Canyon Scenic Drive. The M Diamond Ranch and the road have been featured by Arizona Highways and AZ Central.

So, for the auto-adventurous, here are some things to see and do along the way In nice weather, bring a box lunch, or picnic supplies, and picnic at the Beaver Creek Campground, about 2.5 miles from the interchange. Notice the old Beaver Creek Ranger Station nearby. James D. Bailey, a former Arizona Ranger, was the first Forest Service District Ranger there. He was a partner of Irvin Walker, who homesteaded the M-Diamond Ranch in 1908.

We highly recommend you stop at the V Bar V Heritage site on the right side of the road, just past the campground. It contains displays and information about the old V Bar V Ranch (our neighbor), and guided interpretive tours of world-class petroglyph rock art. Admission is free with a Red Rock Pass, or you can purchase the equivalent there. It is open Friday through Monday 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Plan on an hour to 1.5 hours for this stop.

At the 3.0 mile marker, you will see Sacred Mountain on your left. Drive onto the dirt byway to the fence line. You can take a free, self-guided tour of this ancient Sinaguan pit house and pueblo.

At about mile 4 marker you will see the beautiful red stone gate of Rancho Roca Roja, owned by the Ward family. They helped make Cowboy Artist George Phippen famous by putting his paintings of local western scenes on the old Brown and Bigelow calendars. We have a copy of one he did of Irvin Walker, original owner of the M-Diamond Ranch. Old timers tell us the Wards used to ride over to play poker with Irvin.

At about mile 5.5 is the entrance of the “new” V Bar V Ranch, our next-door neighbor. It is owned by the University of Arizona and operated as an agricultural research station.

And at just under 6.5 miles you will see the M-Diamond entry on your left.

WELCOME adventurers!
